This book moved me in several ways. It’s a book written similarly to the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series. It focuses on people who all have success, wealth, fame and what most would consider “happiness” in common. And others who came up from the streets. Almost all of them have abused alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two. No matter which story you read, one thing is evident- every single one of them tried to fill the “void” in all of us with everything except God.
It took each one of them to hit their rock bottom to be saved by Christ. I think this is a very common theme in our society. Some grow up with Christianity and all is well, or they turn away because of the church and its people. Some never feel worthy due to the misconception of having to be perfect. This book simply shows us that we all have more in common than not. The only way to fill that void is to have a relationship with Christ.
“I am Second” means realizing “Christ is First.” Having a Christ centered life doesn’t mean you have to be perfect, just continue to put Him first and let Him lead. You will be human, and you will come up short. So what- Jesus didn’t come her to save the perfect followers, he came here to save everyone, including the broken and the sinners.
Just turn to the first four chapters of the New Testament and you can read Christ’s words for yourself. “I am Second” focuses on the broken, as we all are if one is truly honest with oneself.
So how to become second?
-Put God first in your life. As Christ to enter your heart. Everything starts with the heart.
-Recognize that Jesus died for your sins and rose again so that you can be forgiven at no charge to you!
-Good works cannot do it alone. Christ must be accepted.
-Grace through faith- faith is an ever working and growing opportunity in my mind. Take one step and you will take another. Walk your walk and not others.
Finally- What now?
-Be baptized! This is your public announcement and cleansing, proclaiming your relationship with Christ.
-Love God = Love People
-Take communion and remember Christ’s sacrifice
-Talk with Him! Aloud or in prayer- or both!
-Give: Money, Time, or Talents, help the poor and pass the good news onto others
I’m not trying to make all of this sound simple; it is not, and I know that firsthand. I’m trying more and more every day.
